usually the beaches get evacuated first.. then all areas east of US1.. this would include most high rises in Brickell, probably..

Last year I had to evacuate twice (I live east of US1).. the first time we went to a friend's house.. it was quite a fun weekend actually.. its nice being cooped up with friend ssometimes.. you play stupid games, talk, watch videos, obsess over news channels.. especially if nothing happens, i guess.. like last year...

The second time we didnt evacuate cause we were skeptical it was gonna hit us.. and it missed luckily...

i am from maryland originally (b-more) but have lived in new orleans the past six years.  i went to tulane for undergad and have lived here the past two years. 

we have had a few hurricane scares here.  once i hid in the closet in my dormroom when i was a freshman, because the university was going to house all of us in the halls of a centralized, and more fortified, dorm.  although probably not the smartest thing i have ever done, it worked out because the hurricane hit the shores of mississippi instead of louisiana.  this past fall residents of new orleans were also urged to evacuate, and i went to atlanta. 

hurricanes don't worry me too much, but in 1992 (i believe) andrew f'ed up miami fairly bad.  something to think about.  as long as you take precautions, we should all be alright.

billthethrill, i am in the same boat as well.  my closest relative lives in atlanta.  i would imagine that miami students have shelthers that they can go to.

hey jeffgdula, i think the movie from their website will show the law school and the surrounding areas.  its been a while since i have seen it, but i am pretty sure they show the areas - just click on the link.

i seriously wouldnt stress about hurricanes or shelters right now.. we get plenty of notice and you have better things to stress about right now..
The shelters are opened a few at a time at first.. so even if I knew of one, it may not be opened during the next storm or whatever.. we seriously have DAYS to prepare for them. and I wouldnt be surprised if UM had a shelter or something.. or there was one by there..

I got some Miami info in the mail yesterday. The map of coral gables is really helpful if you are looking for places to live close to campus, you can see where are the streets are in relation to the school.

I would try and rent a car if I were you. I visited UM in April and I felt that a car is necessary to get around the area.
