How to ask for a deferral

What would be a good way to go about asking for a deferral for a year?  Email, phone call?

What are possible reasons for a deferral being given?

I would say call the admissions office first and ask what their procedure is for deferring one year.

I deferred one school (not one of my top choices) for health reasons. However, I know a lot of people who defer because of employment reasons, family commitments, other opportunities that can't be missed...

You call them up and you TELL them they're giving you a deferral. If they refuse, tell them that you're sure Yale would be more accomodating, at which point they will wonder if you're being serious, and in the confusion will give you the deferral.

just go to their website. most schools have all the information in their law catalog. it will tell you whether or not deferrments are accepted, typically it will also tell you the procedures.

I tried to defer GW in 2002.  They put the kabosh on that idea, but it was ok, 'cause I got a fat raise and now I am realizing it wasn't just the money and not I'm gonna take the LSAt again this month.
