unprofessional? career killer?

i accepted an internship for a judge in superior ct of DC back in Feb. this week offered internship for chief judge in 3rd cir. ct. of appl. in DC.

I will most likely be turning down the appeals internship, out of professionalism and courtesy to the magistrate judge... but

hypothetically, how bad does it look if I were to do the other?
how will that affect career prospects?

Did these judges seem amenable to allowing you to split the summer?

If you applied/interviewed with the second judge after accepting the job with the first judge, then be sure not to let anyone know.  That's bad form.

It looks bad if you back out of an internship just because you got something more prestigious.  There's no sure way to tell how it will affect your career prospects - that's a question you might only be able to answer in retrospect, and even then you might not be sure.  However, I wouldn't want to risk it.

Are you going to school in DC?  If so, see if the second judge will allow you to intern during the school year rather than summer.

Let me guess. You told the judge on the Court of Appeals that you had to decline because you had accepted a position with the Magistrate. The Appeals Judge called the Magistrate to ask if he could have you. The Magistrate called you with his blessings.

I figured he/she was talking about a state court in D.C., not U.S.  But then I guess it would seem weird for D.C. to have multiple appellate courts...

Yeah, I just looked up where the Chief Justice of the 3rd Circuit was and it was in Philly.  Definitely not in D.C.
