Fed judicial internships,

NYC-- Im imagining these are not easy to get for 1Ls but Im hoping someone can relate some experienes in hunting for 1L summer work or 2L school year externship with a federal judge, ie district ct, bankruptcy, int. trade.   Likely not as competitve as BigLaw but are they still looking for top 1L candidates ie T1, top of class.   I fired off a few recently but they were 'cold' resumes/cover letters w/ option of bringing a writing sample to interview.  Should I be refocusing efforts on state trial courts for internships, and do volunteer positions @ state level come along to those who ask nicely?

A good idea is to apply for judicial internships for your first semester of 2L.  They are less competitive and count the same as a summer internship.
