Law review is taking up too much time!
« on: November 03, 2007, 03:16:03 PM »
I am worried that my grades will suffer b/c I am spending so much time working on law review.  This week has been filled with writing an intro and outline for my note and cite checking, as will next week.

I haven't even started outlining yet.  Is it worth it to be on law review if my grades take a nose dive?

Here's another question: Can I quit law review, or is like being in a gang?

Semi-seriously yours,

LawLady

if law school relates in any way to west side story, then yes, law review membership is like gang membership.

Seriously though, just suck it up and do it.  Everyone on law review is seriously busy with interviewing, cite checking, researching, drafting, etc.  I was last year, as were many of my class mates.  I don't think any of us suffered any severe grade repercussions.  In fact, my grades went UP all last year somehow.

No one started outlining until after our big comment/note draft was due before Thanksgiving.  Somehow we all survived.  Just keep working your ass off, and you'll get it all done.  It's your 2L year; outlining doesn't take nearly as long as it did my 1L year for me, and exam prep is not nearly as much work either.  By now, you've figured out how to write an exam answer, so a few practice questions are all you really need to make sure you know the material and can put it together.

It definitely sucks, and anyone on law review feels your pain.  If we survived it, I know you can too!

Law Review - you can check out any time you like, but you can't ever leave. ;-) I concur that is takes a lot more time than I was told it would take. I'm actually pretty excited to do my Note, but the cite checking has been awful. Our group in particular has been blessed with two authors who seem to never cite anything they should. But overall, even though it's a huge time suck, it probably did help me land a sumer job, so I am not too upset about it.

OK, thanks for the advice.  I will suck it up, but I think that I will continue to complain about it.   :D

Complain away! Whining about how much Law Review sucks is our favorite activity in the Law Review office. ;-)

Ditto on law review taking all of my time and not being sure how the grades will turn out this semester.
I doubt you're serious about quitting, but our school has a very strict policy that anyone who quits must tell employers and potential employers about quitting, which can hurt your job offer possibilities.

Law Review is pass/fail so I just get the work done but I try not to care too much about the end product. It's actually been a lot less work than I thought it would be but it is still a pain in the ass. Regardless, Law Review definitely helped during OCI and will help if I want to clerk after school. Also, it makes me feel like I'm better than my classmates. Sad but true.

Update: So, I survived.  Actually, my GPA was slightly worse last semester.  However, I got a lot of interviews that I doubt I would have had otherwise just by putting law review on my resume.  I am glad I did it. Now...if I can only survive the ridiculous elections for senior board this weekend.   :P
