not picked for screening interviews
« on: July 30, 2007, 10:16:15 AM »
My resume looks pretty good.  Top 10%, law review, solid work experience, leadership roles in organizations etc.  However, a few firms doing OCI that I never thought were the most selective, have not picked me for screening interviews while most of the top firms have.  Has anyone else had a similar experience so far?

Interesting...I'm in a similar position as you, but I've only put in bids so far, employers haven't yet selected interviewees.  I'll let you know how that turns out for me.

I have a sneaking suspicion that less selective employers will assume you'll get a better offer elsewhere, and would rather interview a student that might actually end up working for them.  I remember a law school confidential passage where a small-town firm interviewer asked a Penn student who did well in her class why she was wasting her time interviewing with his firm.

Yeah, the only times I got rejected for OCI interviews were smaller, more regional firms that must have assumed they would be wasting their time talking to me.  I actually called one of the firms because I was truly interested and they ended up giving me an on-campus interview followed by a call-back.

The firms are just trying to yield protect. If you really are interested in the firm, give them a call and try to find a graceful way to say "no, really, I am more than willing to grace you with my presence and my ridiculous resume."

late 20s.  You think age matters much?  I'm not too far off the median age.

Now I've had one or two more selective firms not pick me for an interview.  While I'm still getting a lot more interviews than rejections I'm starting to wonder...

First instance of that today:

-Applied to 8 firms in a major city job fair.

-Got 7 screening interviews, as high as V5.

-Lone rejection: from the single no-name firm to which I applied.

I'm wondering if I'll get dinged from any screening interviews. The only credential I'm missing is moot court / mock trial team.

No, I got a screen from them spring OCI, then the ding 2 days later.  Being the glutton for punishment that I am, I'll probably throw my hat in the ring again this time around too...
