How hard do you think it is to move up from top 30% to top 10%?

I feel like I know the areas I struggled in, and are correcting them. What do you think?

I went from 20 to 5, and know other people who made similar jumps.  It can be done.

It had better be possible.  I need to move up by about 25% at this point.  I was a real slacker last semester.

I'd guess it is 1/5th harder than your 30% efforts.

Conversely,

How hard is it to go from Top 10% to say Top 20%, assuming you keep up the work level.

Because if you guys go up someone has to go down.

I'd say hard, but not impossible. But, as Strong points out, only a certain number of people can hold the top-10% spot. If someone new's going in, it's at the expense of someone else going out.

I think you also have to consider the standard deviation and the range of GPAs up at the top.  10% and 20% are only separated by .2 or something, you can imagine that someone will be ripe for the picking.  However, if 10% is separted by .5 from the rest (say that the top of the class really kicked ass), then it obviously will be a much more difficult challenge.

I also think that schools with higher curves make it easier for more movement. If the curve is a 3.2, there's less ability for the top of the class to distinguish themselves.

What percentage of your total 1L credits do you have now? I know some schools that give out only two grades after first semester, so I'd imagine there is a lot of movement in and out of the top 10% there because you may just have gotten lucky with your first two exams. If you have half, then it's definitely still possible but going to be much more difficult. It also depends on your curve (if you have one) and how high it is. If you're in a lower curve, it's going to be much harder to pull yourself up since the middle 60-70% usually have very similar grades while the top 10% tends to be much higher.
