Some general questions. Please help!!
« on: January 12, 2007, 02:10:18 PM »
Hi all. I am entering school this fall and have a few questions that hopefully some of you already enrolled can help me with. I will likely be entering a T1 school on a part-time basis. I am in the midst of finishing my PhD in molecular biology and am going to try to get a job in a firm near my school as technical specialist, or something of the like. My questions are thus: 1) Is it very difficult (or even possible) to get a position on the Law Review as a part-timer? 2) How are part-timers assessed relative to the others in their class- compared just to other PTers? the PTers and full-timers? 3) Assuming I am unable to land a job in the first year, should I take Summer classes to catch up and then enroll as a full time 2L? and 4) This is a big one for me- also assuming I don't land a job, will I be able to take out loans in excess of tuition/living costs to cover other things (such as my car payment, credit cards, etc.)?

Any help will be much appreciated.

Keep fighting the good fight...

CF

All I can help you with is the last question.

My school increased my student budget so I could take out loans for car and health insurance.  From most loan companies, we can't borrow more money than our student budget allows.  Credit card debt will probably NOT be included in your student budget; people are generally advised to pay off car payments and credit card debt BEFORE you start school.

Some loan companies may not tie you to the budget, but I can't imagine you'd get a decent interest rate on that.

A note on the last item of adjusting loan sizes.  Another thing they will not increase loan sizes for is additional family.  You can't get any more for being married or having children.

This is not the case in my experience.  I have found that loan companies are much more than willing to allow you to borrow as much as you'd like; it is your school that restricts you.  I haven't had a loan company yet raise a rate on me based on attempting to borrow over the school budget.  And I spend baby.
