$475/week?

$475/week?
« on: January 05, 2007, 09:57:26 AM »
I just received an offer from a medium-sized firm (large in the context of the area, but only about 45 lawyers) for a 1L summer position. The pay for a 1L summer associate is $475/week.

I'm assuming since 1L firm jobs are hard to come by that there is no point in attempting to negotiate salary. Is this a normal/respectable salary? (it seems really low!)

I'm not sure how long I have to get back to them. Thoughts?

What were you expecting?  You probably need to be realistic about your 1L salary.  Besides, it's not all that bad unless you have to pay for a studio apt. in New York in order to work there.

No major expenses (I could commute from home) - I just didn't realize there was such a gap between the "biglaw" big city firms an hour away and the rest of the pack.

I wasn't expecting a NYC or Boston salary by any means, but the local big city firms were paying $2000+/week so I was hoping for maybe $500-$1000/week (not knowing what to realistically expect)

Another consideration is if the firm is the largest in the area, it probably also pays the highest salary in the area, so that may be as well as you are going to do unless you want to go to the nearby city. Large firms in my area hire 1L students around February so you may still have a shot at the big money, but I certainly wouldn't let your offer lapse in order to have an outside shot at one of those rare opportunities. What it comes down to is working at any reasonably sized firm 1L summer is a great opportunity and you should take it and appreciate the chance to make a bit of money, unless of course a better one falls into your lap.

From what I understand most 1L internships are unpaid. Congrats on getting an offer for one with compensation! It may only be about five hundred a week, but that's huge compared to nothing. Congrats!

Olive, what school are you attending?

Do you know how much they pay their 2L summer clerks, what about their starting salary for new associates?

Top 25, prefer not to specify further.

I don't have a clue as to the firm's 2L salary or salary for new associates. If they are not a NALP firm is there a way I can figure this out?

Most firms don't pay that much of a difference between 1Ls and 2Ls if they do hire 1Ls.

What type of law do they do and what do you expect to do as a summer law clerk?
