envelopes?

This is probably a dumb question but do we need to go with full-size envelopes when mailing out cover letters/ resumes?

my career services office said manila envelopes so you dont fold anything. i imagine this will become very expensive. anyone else?

Go with business sized envelopes.  They are set up so that you place two folds in them (dividing the long side of the paper in thirds).  They're the most commonly used size of envelope in the business world.  Manilla envelopes are only for things you really don't want to bend, such as an 8x10 picture or an inch thick stack of papers.

Likewise, do not choose the small envelopes that you have to fold your paper up to 1/6th the size to get it in.

well business size sounds great to me (way cheaper and easier) but are you guys sure about folding your resume and cover letter like that?

Thats what business people use when they need to send out mail.

Just have it couriered over if you are that worried about neatly folding expensive paper.

are you serious?  It's paper.  Just fold it, put it in the envelope, and stick the stamp on.  If you get any interviews, you should start hoping and praying that they never realize you completely lack common sense.

do you honestly think that law firms are going to say "well we were going to give this a kid an interview, but since he folded his coverletter and resume we should just reject him." the only time i ever sent my letter and resume to a law firm in a manilla envelop was when the firm requested a ten page writing sample. other than that, send your stuff regular business style and worry about your grades and initial resume rather than how you send it.

Don't take wat CSO says as the gospel. Confirm with multiple sources.

It's not necessarily just common sense when you are trying to get every possible edge and be thorough.
