If you'd need to register in New York, that's a NY law. My mom works at a dealership in Nebraska, so both my wife and I have gotten our cars through there. They just slap on the piece of paper that says temporary, and let us carry the necessary documents for registration down to Texas with us.
The flight to NY and drive back are still something that can't really be avoided. Well, the flight can be avoided if you trust your dad's choice in cars, and he's willing to drive down to TX to visit his little baby.
