What is the timeline for transferring?
« on: June 12, 2006, 12:12:19 PM »
I'm starting law school in the fall, most likely at GW, and if things go well enough I may look to transfer.  I have questions about how the transferring process differs from the first application process from a timeline standpoint.  (The thing is, I'm getting married next summer and I'm wondering how a transfer would fit with everything else.)

When do applications go out?

When do decisions usually come back?

When is the time to start asking for recommendations?

Any thing else I haven't mentioned that I should know?

Thank you in advance for any help with this.

Form what I recollect applications are usually due around July 1.  Decisions usually come back somewhere between July 15th and a late as August 15th.  If grades are good start asking for recommendations during finals period.  If your're not sure about grades (i.e. all your classes are full-year courses) then you can ask last minute as I did and get stuff together starting around June 15th.

Good luck next year.

Thank you in advance for any help with this.

Applications go out depending on the school.  GULC and schools like WUSTL have early admission for transfers, so those can get in early.  The majority of schools start accepting transfers as early as April, with deadlines ranging from July 1st to July15th.

Decision come back as early as the end of July to the end of August.

The time to ask for recommendations will depend heavily on whether you decide to apply to ED programs at WUSTL or to regular programs.  However, give your recommendators at least a month to get the letter out.

Look at certain schools' rate of acceptance.  While you have schools like Yale that accept 5 people, there are schools like NYU that accept about 50.  This can certainly affect your chances of getting in.

Hope this information helps!
