most coveted 1L summer jobs?

So, what's the hardest to get, most prestigious (etc.) job?  I'm definitely thinking about clerking after law school, and want to know what's the best path to take that first summer...

Order of prestige

1) BIGLAW firm job.

2) Externing for a judge

3) Researching with a professor

4) Government/non-profit

The lawyers I know say govt. jobs are the best. Biglaw/Midlaw and stuff like that doesn't get your hands dirty. If you work for the DA you'll be shoveling *&^% with your barehands. They like to see a prospect with some govt. experience, it indicates they've actually done some hands on stuff.

So, does it look bad if you're highly ranked but you're working in PI? I might try a firm job my second summer to round out my resume and to test the waters.  Does working PI first summer handicap me for OCI in the fall?

Yeah, but making $2k+/week and paying some bills or having some extra $$$ to live off of during the school year is great.  :D

I completely disagree that working for a public interest firm or non-profit (as long as you're doing REAL legal work) is not prestigious if you're at a high-ranked school.  If you're at a good school, no one cares what you do your 1L summer as long as it's legal related and interesting.  No one cares if you get a firm job, in fact, they ENCOURAGE us strongly to take PI jobs.
