Do LLM students generally have work experience or do they go right after JD?

Im assuming they have some work experience, but I guess if one was having trouble finding a nice job in the first place this might be a good thing to do before entering the job market...

The vast majority of LLMs at my school are foreign students.  I think that most of them have already practiced law in their home countries. 
I suppose that some American JDs get LLMs because it would increase their prestige, but I don't think this is very common. 
The one field where I know that an LLM is valuable is Tax.
