What did y'all do during your 1L summer?

I know I am not getting a paid internship this summer (listened to career services and didnt apply yet so I guess Im screwed). How did y'all get stuff paid for during the summer months? I didnt get any scholarships at all and the school is very expensive. Additionally, my rent is not cheap. What are the best loan options out there for the summer months? I wanted to do summer abroad but i dont have $10K lying around or rich parents.

I worked for a firm back near my hometown.  It's not too late for you to get something, I didn't apply until early January.  It was tough, and I wish I had applied earlier, but it's never too late.  It doesn't hurt at all to send out your resume- the worst they can say is no and try again next year.

I wouldn't recommend summer abroad, my friends that did that had fun but for the most part it didn't help them with the job search.  Most of them made it seem like a pricy vacation.  :-)

I got a grant to work at a legal aid organization.  If you can't find any grants, I would recommend getting a half-time gig with some sort of non-profit and waiting tables or something like that to cover your expenses.

Interned at inhouse legal department.
Pros: learned a lot.  The company is very well repsected, so it was good for resumes.  The attorneys knew a lot of people
Cons: not paid.  Everything I did was inhouse and confidential - that meant I did not have walk out with any writing samples for interviews.  The size of the operation makes it difficult to be proactive.

I did summer school; a class, to get it out of the way, and a clinic for some "hands on".

i plan on working for a solo downtown. hopefully he follows through on his "promise" (or i may have to bring a lawsuit for promissory estoppel against him!).

I took 3 classes and did a judicial externship at municipal court.  Since I took classes I was able to get financial aid to cover my living expenses for the summer.  The classes I took didn't really take much time.  1 was in an intensive, week-long format.  Another was only 6 weeks long.  The 3rd was just a short class that went along with the externship and only met about 5 times for a 1/2 hour or less.  Another plus to taking the summer classes is that I've been able to take less classes each semester of this year.  A friend of mine who also did summer school has continued to take the full load of classes this year and will have a very easy 3rd year.  My 3rd year will also be pretty light, but I will still have to take a few bar classes.

Legalise is on point. the fact you will still be in school, thus getting financial aid is HUGE! Take a class or two, in addition to some clinic/internship/externship at your school. You will have something to put on your resume, get some classes out of the way, and not starve and worry about how you will pay your rent. I wish I had done this first year.

I know this is an old post, but why couldn't this poster just delete/change the names in the writing sample to avoid sacrificing confidentiality?
