Cover letters

in my rush home after the final exam period i accidentally left my CDO packet on the desk - so unfortunately  now I have to write my cover letter "blind". can anyone provide me with the basics of a cover letter? can i write a generic one that can be sent to multiple employers without revision or do I have to tailor this thing to match each position that I apply to?

and yes, of course, i am a confused 1L ...

The general advise in business, not unique to law students, is to write a individualized cover letter to each company (firm) to which you're sending a application or resume.

I can vouch for that. Your response rate will be much, much higher if it is individualized. It's already tough enough to get a paying job as a 1L. If you do the mass letter merge, then you will probably get close to a zero response.
