Law School Schedule
« on: October 13, 2005, 03:04:12 PM »
Can anyone tell me what a typical schedule is for a first year law student? I've heard that you get no choice in it. 5 days a week, early or late, etc. ?? Thanks!

That's about right. There's no choice about what you take. It doesn't matter anyway. Even if you had a choice, you'd still have to take these courses just to begin to understand what's going on. Besides that, it's nice not to have to screw with registration. They just send you a schedule (and a bill).

My schedule is:

Monday
8:30am - 9:20am - Criminal Law
11:30am - 12:20pm - Real Property
12:30pm -  1:20pm -  Torts

Tuesday
10:30am - 11:20am - Civil Procedure
11:30am - 12:20pm - Real Property
1:30pm - 2:20pm - Legal Research and Writing
2:30 - 3:20 - Torts

Wednesday
10:30am - 11:20am - Legal Research and Writing
11:30am - 12:20pm - Civil Procedure

Thursday
8:30am - 9:20am - Criminal Law
10:30am - 11:20am - Civil Procedure
11:30am - 12:20pm - Real Property
2:30pm - 3:20pm - Torts

Friday
8:30am - 9:20am - Criminal Law
10:30am - 11:20am - Civil Procedure
1:30pm - 2:20pm - Legal Research and Writing

From what I hear, my section has the best schedule, but the other sections aren't to much different than this. My school is pretty compassionate about how they schedule first year courses. In the second and third year, when you make your own schedule, you have less flexibility and can get screwed. This is especially true if you're taking courses taught by an adjunct. Those classes are always at night, because the instructors are practicing attorney's during the day. All in all, the first year schedule is not that bad. It's the outside of class preparation that can be tough.

Disclaimer: This is just how it is at my school. It could be different or similar at other places.

my schedule (of classes) is essentially:

monday: 11-3
tuesday: 10-3
weds: 10-2
thursday: 11-1
friday: 11-4

it's not bad. i have a few hour breaks in there too, which of course, i try to use to do work (and/or eat).

as far as studying -- i study around 3-4 hours a day monday through friday (more like 2 on friday), take saturday off, then do around 5 or 6 on sunday.

Can anyone tell me what a typical schedule is for a first year law student? I've heard that you get no choice in it. 5 days a week, early or late, etc. ?? Thanks!

That's right. Most people study in between classes, and several hours after class. In all, I probably put in 5-7 hours of outside study time. I guesstimate 2-3 hours of prep for each class meeting. It's about like a full time job. I go to class five days a week, and study six days a week with most of those days lasting about 10 hours. I take off after class on Friday and usually all day Saturday. There's alot of time left to screw around if you think about it. 24 hours in a day. 6-8 hours of sleep. 10 hours of study. There's 6-8 hours per day plus Friday night and Saturday left for bar review ;).

Thanks for the info. So is it pretty much impossible to work, even as a server on the weekends?

I wouldn't say it's impossible. I don't know anyone that works though. Someone else may want to weigh in on this. I wouldn't want a job only because I'm having fun taking afternoon naps, playing intramurals, and drinking. But, that's just me.

i think it's cool that the classes are like an hour long each...

classes tend to get boring when it's over 2 hours.

I agree that it makes it less boring but, overall, I don't think it's better because it's really annoying having to get to class 10 mins early for a 50 minute class and get my books at my locker each time. It ends up taking up more time, so it's a bad use of time. I'd rather just have an hour and a half or two hour class and get it over with then have to keep going back and forth so often.
