What the hell are schools in New Orleans doing?
« on: August 30, 2005, 08:36:40 PM »
This applies to all schools obviously, but does anyone here go to Tulane or Loyola? It looks like that city is going to be out of commission for a pretty long time. I guess you just have to pack your bags up and start over next year.

I looked online and the webpages are down for all of them right now.

That would really suck. I feel bad for them. As a 1L you're so ready to get started, and as an upperclassmen, you're so ready to get it over with. That's a no win for everybody.

I have a friend at Tulane undergrad, last she heard classes were cancelled for the week with the possibility of classes being cancelled for the semester.  I'd be willing to bet good money that they're cancelling for the semester
In: BC, Northeastern ($), Quinnipaic ($$), Suffolk ($), Temple ($)
Waitlisted: W&M, W&L

LSU's classes are cancelled through Labor Day weekend and the football game's postponed....and there's little damage in Baton Rouge. I'm willing to bet it's going to be a while before any school in New Orleans has another class.

I just came here to post the same question.  I'm a 2L at Loyola and as of right now, their emergency line stated the school hasn't received extensive damage, but has to wait until the city is habitable and we have utilities.  I have heard that Dillard University and Xavier University (undergrad schools in New Orleans) have cancelled this semester.

But what happens with us??  Does anyone from the Florida schools who were hit previously have info on what they did for you?  I heard a rumor they would transfer us to LSU or Louisiana Southern, but where would we live?  Would we have the same profs?  Yikes, so scary!

There is a place for Tulane Law School students to visit for more information: www.law.emory.edu/tulane

Also, there is a google group being formed called Tulane Law School Evacuees.

There are discussions with the dean of Emory Law, and there's a decent possiblity that we may be hosting some of their students, for at least the semester.

I don't have any information but I just wanted to let the N.O. school students know that my thoughts are with you in this terribly scary and uncertain time.  That goes for anyone who is a resident of the areas hit or anyone who has family in the effected areas.

In recent years, none of the FL schools have been pummelled by hurricanes. Generally, they were shut down for a few days at worst. Although this doesn't help those of you who are law school students in NO, I understand that the FL Universities are offering to allow undergrads who were/are affected by Katrina to take classes this semester at a FL University.

Here's part of an email I just got from our dean:

In light of the horrific tragedy unfolding in New Orleans, most, if not
all, of the law schools have agreed to take in 2d and 3d year law
students as visiting students for at least the fall semester.  We at
Capital will gladly do the same.  If you know of any Tulane or Loyola
law students in central Ohio who wish to continue their legal education
this fall please have them contact Associate Dean Shirley Mays as soon
as possible.  As we are in the middle of our second week of school time
is of the essence.  We will work out all of the details around issues of
good standing etc. in due time.  Establishing some sense of normalcy for
these students may be the best we can do in the short run.

We here at Capital (in Columbus, Ohio) would be happy to welcome any Katrina-displaced students.  If you're reading this board and need a place to go, send me a private message and I will get you all the information you need.

Our thoughts and prayers are with you.
