Regional disparities between schools and jobs?

Hi,

If you attend a school in california (for instance USC, UCLA, etc) or on the east coast (cornell, etc) and you want to get a job in chicago, does the fact that you studied at a school in a different area discourage potential employers?  Does it make it more difficult to get interviews?  Does this limit you to some degree to the general area in which you attended law school?

It really depends on the school from what I have heard.  If you attend a nationally respcted school then it should not have much of an effect, AND can show a connection to the area or a solid reason why you want to be there then you should have a shot.

There is a regional disparity depending on how well regarded your school is. It's probably easier to switch coasts having attending a top 14 like Cornell than it is to switch coasts from a regional school like USC. Either way, you'll still need a story explaining your desire to be on the opposite coast. Firms don't want to waste spending time money on callbacks and having you as a summer and then have you decide to stay on the coast of your school.
