Forced Curve...What Is It?

I'm an incoming 1L, and I know this may be a dumb question, but I'm sure someone here can help me.  What exactly is a forced curve, and how does it work?

They only give out so many A's, B's etc per class.  Usually just a couple A's.  You can write a terrific exam, but if 4 people wrote a better one, you get a B.
