I'll try to give you some useful advice. I got a job through networking instead of OCI or what I did my 2L summer. Both of my 2L summer jobs asked me to come back after I passed the bar, but they don't make pre-bar offers.
If OCI at your school is over, go check in with your Career Services people. There are going to be lots of smaller firms that want resumes but don't want to go through the expense of an OCI cattle call. If you're looking out of your school's market, it's time to do some effective direct marketing.
I'd look to smaller firms, since they hire on an as-needed basis rather than the school schedule. The stigma of working for a midsize firm is not as bad as a few months of unemployment or contract work.
