Though I should have better things to do at work than reply to this..

SleepyGuy, its ok that you dont know what you are talking about.  You have never lived in pittsburgh before.  If you have "friends" in shadyside, they have heard about the break ins.

you are not going to be a star in law school.  You just got way too emotional and forgot to remember what I actually said.  I never said that pittsburgh is dangerous, as it is not.  Pittsburgh is one of the safest cities in the country.  I just said that shadyside is one of the worst neighborhoods for petty theft, which it is.  Don't think it's as great as you have it built up in your head to be.  OVERRATED!!!!!!!!

by the way, before you say something dumb in pittsburgh like, oh there are a million people in the metro area, remember that pittsburgh itself has 340,000 people, and allegheny county has 600,000 people.  i know the definition of metro area, but... it is just not a valid indicator of actual population density in pittsburgh.

You're going to have to read to halfway down the article to get the juicy stat comparing shadyside and the worst neighborhood in pittsburgh:

you heard about the pizza guys who got shot, right?

oh yeah, heres the shadyside meth lab:

Read the guys comment down the page about shadyside.
http://forums.officer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=28831&page=3

that was all the info i could find in five minutes.

Listen man, why do you care what I think?

by the way, the city police department doesnt report car jacks.  Many police departments do-pittsburgh does not. I work at a restaurant in bloomfield right now, and we just had 7 customers get there cars broken into in one night.  Not in the paper of course.  But you knew that, right?

"its pretty easy to infer..."   hehehehehe, you make it sound like you have "discovered" something.  I wear my bias on my sleeve: obviously its obvious.

Shadyside gets a lot of attention.  It has brick buildings, a williams sonoma, and a lot of people with 6 inch dogs.  Obviously i dont like shadyside, thats why im telling you its not all you think it is.

YOu want to rent with the idea of market inneficiencies in mind: popular will mean more crime, higher value, and more annoying people.

However, the biggest argument for living in shadyside is that all the bars that law students go to (the grove, william penn, village pizza, etc) are in shadyside, so if you want to walk home this is where to live.  This arguemnt alone justifies living in shadyside.

ok, here we go.  Some of these areas dont have a lot of homes for rent, or dont have public transportation right into oakland.  But they are all safer, many are as nice, and they are all cheaper.  IF you are a law student concerned about identifying and taking advantage of market inneficiencies, look here first.

Friendship (though shadyside area code, so technically shadyside)
Regent Square
Squirell Hill (though also overrated, but not dangerous)
Beechview
Greenfield
Polish Hill (great safe as hell quiet old person neighborhood)
Highland Park (some)
Spring Hill
Troy Hill (entire north side)
Mt Washington
Duquesne
Allentown
Carrick
Arlington
Hazelwood
Glen Hazel
Brookline
South Oakland

Im not trying to be a male private part by listing so many neighborhoods, but i think they are all better.

p.s. shadyguy, one more time.  you will probably not get robbed and you will probably like shadyside, just like i said in the first place.  Im am just telling you man, i have lived here for my whole life and there are a lot of break ins.  as to the unreliability of my info- like i said, that was what i came up with a five minute google.

Abe, I think the main problem with your original post is that it seemed alarmist.  From your following posts it seems that you were simply trying to convey some information.  I took what you said as sounding suspiciously harsh as well, but it seems you didn't mean it that way.  My main reason for living in Shadyside is the ability to walk or bike just about wherever I need to go. I doubt if anyone on this board will be concerned about living a block from Banana Republic.  I do, however, like being within a few blocks of groceries, restaurants, bars, banks, etc. I looked in Bloomfield and Friendship and they both seemed too far away from everywhere I will need to go.

Hi everbody I just found a GREAT place to live and I thought I would share it with everybody.  It's called the Barco Law Library at the University of Pittsburgh.  Its got a great location (close to all the classes), its quiet, and the crime rate is really low (only three reports of stolen ideas last year)!  But I do have to say, the rent is a little expensive ($18,000 in state, $28,000 out of state).  If anyone wants to stay
with me we could split the cost, it would be great!

In all seriousness though, I don't really care where I end up living becasue I'm sure I'll end up practically living in the library anyways.  As long as the thieves don't steal my bed before I get home and pass out on it, I'll be fine.

Also Abe, are you a current Pitt law student or soon to be Pitt law student? Just wondering.

I'm not sure it's a website.  I think they just have information in the admissions office ( or they will soon).  I think they said starting in May they would have that info.  Did you hear it was a website?

Hello.  Cool board.  I never knew that shadyside is the new vice city.  anyway,

my name is josh and i might be able to help someone with housing.  I have lived here in pittsburgh for a year and have a lease ending in june. Back in march i was looking for apartments and I found a great one.

The dakota, run by mozart management, they have only grad housing, you get a single or a studio, i have a decent little place and UTILITIES are included 400 a month.  HEAT out here for those whose parents paid the bill/from cali can get pricey.  It is in north oakland two feet from a giant eagle, a liquor store, a dry cleaners, and about 10 delivery places.  .75 miles from campus, bus goes right from the corner.

(I just read my post over again and... i am NOT being paid by mozart to promote!!  just like this place)

Nice!  Also if you guys want to rent in bloomfield my boss has some nice but cheap places.  His dad is Dennis Harrington, famous trial lawyer in pittsburgh, so might be a good connection for those personal injury types as well!  email me about this.

My leasing agent from mozart said that his apartments are going faster than they have in the last 10 years for some reason.  He thinks its because of the new hillman cancer center, but i dont know.  So anyway, folks here going to pitt might want to do this earlier rather than later.

See y'all in school.

A few weeks ago I did a google search for mozart management.  I found a lot of forums like this where people bitched about the mamagement.  I'm sure that happens with all management companies, but these people seemed brutal.  Just a word of warning.  I don't work for a management company, I'm just a thorough researcher.  ;)

I haven't heard anything about the housing website.  Let me know if you find anything out.  I'm going house shopping down there Saturday.
