It is basically like getting waitlisted but less formal. They will review your file again once they have a better idea of the incoming class. That is my understanding anyway.

Different schools use the words to mean different things, but generally a deferral or a hold are not decisions. Acceptance, denial and waitlist are decisions.

it varies slightly depending on which school you are talking about, but it is almost always below waitlist...

I agree. A deferral is them putting off a decision on you. Where as the others are decisions.

Sometimes it means that you're sprayed with a high pressure fire hose to keep you from doing something. Maybe that's "deterred".
