i'm pretty sure this is true.  and it also doesn't work with people who learned to read and write later in life.  I think I remember from my perception psych class in undergrad that it's an acquired 'trick' your brain learns while it's developing.

It's pretty cool how easy it is to read it, though. At first glance it's gibberish but then you're reading it!

I was elementary ed undergrad, and we taught kids to learn the spelling and the shape of the words...especially children with difficulties in the language arts area.  Sometimes we'd give them an "outline" (of where letters go above the middle line, and dip below the bottom line) and give them a few letters, and they would have to fill in the blanks...it was cool.
