I just want everyone to know that I am the director and founder of the Pre-Law Summer Institute.  I decided to to start the Institute after having successfully practiced law for 11 years as a personal injury attorney.  I found myself wanting to see more African American attorneys like myself in the courtroom.  I wondered if the reason I didnt see more of us in the courtroom was partly because we couldnt get through law school.  I decided to not just wonder about it, but to do something about it.  I have poured my heart and soul into this Institute to make sure that all the peripheral stuff is eliminated.  Only that which will make the difference and give someone that necessary edge will be taught.  I believe AA make great lawyers.  We have both the passion and compassion that serves any client well.  But, you can not be a lawyer without getting through law school.  My institute will help for any law school you attend...guaranteed!  Go to ncprelawinstitute.com

Hey all,

Just wanted to drop by and give a thank you to all the posters who've helped me so far.  t L's prediction has been spot on so far, and all the recommendations from many of the posters here have helped me create a quality list of schools.

More info:

WL from 3 schools
Accepted at 7 schools
Waiting on 3 others

Thanks again, everyone!

« Reply #3482 on: March 28, 2009, 05:47:44 PM »
3.6, 165

Reaches

Yale
NYU
Columbia
Berkeley
Penn
U of Virginia

Targets
UCLA
USC
Vanderbilt
William and Lee
Boston University
Fordham

Safety

Ohio (Mortiz)
LMU

Ohio is actually one of my top choice, but I can never picture myself living in Ohio, their programs and dual degrees are pretty awesome. Maybe with the right money I might change my mind. Thanks!

Not a very good shot at Yale. Excellent chances everywhere else. You should also throw an app into Harvard.

Stats:
African American Female
BS, Chemistry (3.3 UGPA)
PhD, Pharmacology from Cornell University
LSAT: 172

Only schools I REALLY want to go to are Harvard, Columbia, NYU and Georgetown. I will also apply to Yale but I know it is a reach. How are my chances for those schools with my PhD on the table, as well?

I'm thinking about health law/policy, intellectual property/patent law.

I'm pretty sure it would be a no at Yale, but I think a yes for the others.  Definitely a scholarship at Georgetown (don't expect more than roughly $60K over 3 years).

Why and automatic no for Yale? Because of the GPA? and what about money at Columbia and NYU?

and also, what about Penn?

Yes, because of the GPA.

Not sure about how Columbia and NYU would work their money, so I'll defer to another poster.

Very likely to get money at Penn or at the very least, an invitation to apply for one of their big scholarships.  Just my opinion :)

The PhD would certainly help at YLS, so I wouldn't say you're automatically out there.
