DA Jordan loses on discrimination ruling

A federal judge has ruled that the employment discrimination case against Orleans Parish District Attorney Eddie Jordan may move forward to trial in March.

On Jan. 21, 2003, eight days after taking office, Jordan fired 56 of 136 non-legal employees. Of the fired, 53 were white, one was Hispanic and two were African-American.

Within six months, Jordan replaced the lot with 68 people — 63 of whom were African-American and five Caucasians. “The court does not require a statistician to determine these numbers present a question of fact as whether the terminations were race neutral,” U.S. District Court Judge Stanwood Duval wrote in a decision released this week.

Forty-four former employees have sued Jordan in U.S. District Court, claiming racial discrimination was behind the housecleaning.
