for many judges, but Texas judges in particular, it is definitely more "who you know" than "what you know".

The judge in my hometown (which is in Texas) didn't go to law school.  Granted, this town ain't New York, but I guess it shows it can be done.  He's been there as long as I can remember and most everyone thinks pretty highly of him.

Like I said, municipal judges, JPs, and county judges in rural areas generally aren't lawyers.
