The Black Alternative/Metal/Punk Fan Thread
« on: February 22, 2005, 08:13:36 PM »
Hopefully, we can get this thread to start of as good and insightful discussion amongst those of us "people of color" who either prefer or also listen to such the somewhat "nontraditional" music genres of alternative, punk, metal, etc.

Basically, what kind of alternative music do you listen to? What are your favorite bands? Any insights into why there aren't more black musicians in the alternative scene, and any experiences you may have had being in this "minority amongst the minority".

Go on, talk amongst' y'selves...
"Remove the chain, cause' that's off it!"

Acceptances: Georgetown ("off da' chain!")
That is all...

John Mayer
Damien Rice etc...
earlier Lenny Kravitz works
We're not accepting this CHANGE UP in the rules. Period. American presidents have been in the bed with organized crime, corporate pilferers, and the like for years. And all u want to put on this man is that his pastor said "Gotdamn America?" Hell, America.U got off pretty damn well, if you ask me...

Coldplay rawks!
I like Incubus too.
Darius Rucker isn't really alternative but I love his solo album.

punk music is for losers. let's be serious.

my iPod just wigged the @#!* out. like, it froze, and i couldn't reset it, so i just plugged it into my computer and went to sleep. i was actually awakened just now by the sound of it disconnecting or something from my computer, and when i looked at the screen, there was a picture of a battery being defective. i hope it's not about to break; this is my 3rd iPod this year.

anyway, the best way to get an adequate sense of my taste in music is to look at the top played songs on iTunes. This isn't really an accurate list because i recently reformatted my hard drive. anyway, i'll just type them until i lose interest in typing. they are:

drop it like it's hot- snoop and pharrell
The noose - a perfect circle
cure my tragedy -cold
i changed my mind - keyshia cole
blue - a perfect circle
a rush of blood to th head - coldplay
useless - depeche mode
sex, love, and money - mos def
trippin' - total
the dark of the matinee - franz ferdinand
never - overseer (omg, this song rocks-- you have got to get this *&^% from iTunes.)
overnight celebrity - twista
so cold - breaking benjamin
i know - placebo
rue des cascades - yann tiersen
last dance with mary jane - tom petty and the heartbreakers
set the ray to jerry - smashing pumpkins
dip it low - christina milian
the dolphins cry - live
spiders - system of a down
yeah, whatever - splender
goin' up yonder - MC Hammer (i don't wanna hear it; this *&^% rocks)
yeah - usher
violin concerto #8 - brahms
passive - a perfect circle
vitamin r (leading us along)-chevelle
kakumei - dj taka (this is a DDR song; a dance beat to chopin's revolutionary etude)
take me out - franz ferdinand
reincarnation song - toad the wet sprocket
you lied - tool
where - ultraspank
fancy - reba mcintyre
it was written - dameon marley
hey - the pixies
the remedy - abandoned pool
the boogie that be - black eyed peas

the only music i've never been fond of is country & western. i grew up in a place where it was always playing, and i just feel that the songs are all so cliche. i mean, you really can't tell the difference between a genre parody and an actual c&w song.

I like Linkin Park, Evanescence, and the Killers.  I like all kinds of music actually so I'm open to all genres... except heavy metal.
It's the most wonderful time of the year!
