Which One? LSU, Loyola , Tulane?

Which One? LSU, Loyola , Tulane?
« on: February 17, 2005, 01:27:05 PM »
Been reading for a long time on here, never had anything to post, but now any advice would be great. I need to decide b/t LSU (1/2 tuition grant $5250), Loyola ($15k a yr) and Tulane (if they even accept me!). I've read all the posts on this topic, but I'd still like a little more help.
I've lived in LA my whole life, and would be fine w/ practicing here. Am I hurting my career earnings potential by picking either school?? LSU is ranked higher than Loyola, but Loyola grads earn on average more. To keep my grant at LSU, I have to remain in the top 1/3 of the class, which I am fairly confident I can do. And what about Tulane, assuming they accept me w/ little or no money.

Any thoughts would be great.

I am NOT a fan of Tulane... LSU or Loyola would be awesome. Search for the thread a couple of days ago about Loyola...there were some good stats in there.  Or, Geaux Tigers.

If you're content/set on working in New Orleans, I'd choose Loyola where there is deep alumni loyalty and you're almost assured a job. If you wanted to keep your options open to other parts of the state, then LSU. Employment rates are pretty high at LSU but if you're not ranked highly you may have to practice outside of SE Louisiana (i.e. Lake Charles, Alexandria, Shreveport, Monroe, etc.)I don't think Tulane is worth paying full price if you're content on practicing in Louisiana. Just my .02.

interesting...
i applied to all three myself...and am waitlisted from loyola (why, i dont know), waitlisted at Lsu(dean said I'm a victim of the out of state status right now), and waiting to hear from tulane...

tulane seems like the best bet..;..in terms of national job prospects and reputation.

Sounds like the school atmosphere and city might be what should make your decision for you.  I'm going to LSU...mostly because I am more comfortable with big state schools (TEXAS undergrad)...and I really like the size of Baton Rouge etc.  At some point, it really just becomes about where you are going to feel the most comfortable and where you will have the greatest opportunity for academic success...and eventually professional success.  I'm not so sure there is a huge difference in the success that you can expect if you grad near the top of your class at any of these schools...especially if you plan on practicing in Louisiana.    Good luck on your decision.

Tony, do you mind posting your stats.  I applied to all 3 as well.  Accepted at Loyola and waiting on tulane, lsu. I am in state though...

golfergirl, interesting post.

i have often thought this.  if, and it is a big if, i am accepted to tulane, it would be hard for me to turn it down.  however, with the intention of living in louisiana, it is hard to believe one can pick a better choice than lsu, especially for us in-staters.

all three schools have their advantages and disadvantages.  i would rank what is important to you in a school, and go from there.  good luck, either way.

Thanks so far,

I think I am really leaning towards LSU for several reasons. I like it here and I am comfortable w/ the city, significantly cheaper, have a house, job prospects are just as good if not better (except maybe NO). And I also hear that clerkships are easier to get w/ an LSU degree.
I'm just trying to keep an open mind, don't want to limit myself. Do you all think that by picking LSU pver Loyola I would be hurting myself w/ job prospects in NO?? I don't really think so. My aunt and uncle went to Loyola, partly b/c they were already living in NO. One is a judge and the other is a partner at an established firm in NO. They say it doesn't matter too much, and for the money go LSU. But they said someone just graduating at about the middle of their class, the Loyola grad would have better chances in NO.
    Just adding on.

I decided I would be going to LSU a while back. I decided this mainly because I want to get into politics and would be able to network across the state better there.

You have already brought up good points, such as tuition (I received the same scholarship.) May I add that the facilities at Loyola are not the best, while at Hebert Law Center they just completed a massive renovation.

There are enough LSU grads in the New Orleans area (where I will most likely be practicing) that I am not afraid of being without a job.

If you are going to practice in Louisiana, I see little reason to go to Tulane, otherwise known as Little New York.
