Department of Justice?

Department of Justice?

Here's a question - how does one pull a DOJ job straight out of school?  I know nothing except that it's apparently mad competitive.  Do you have to come out of HYS and/or know the attorney general to have a chance, or does anyone that does well have a fair shot?  Their website says a person's law school doesn't matter too much, but I just don't think I believe that...

First you have to have top numbers in your law school. Top rank. Top GPA. Right out of law school is a difficult task. They do have a honors program for law school graduates. Law school graduates compete for a limited number of spots. Another way is for you to get a clerkship and work a few years. Your chances at the DOJ rests will always come down to how well you do in law school. You can get all of the details in the book " America's Greatest Place to work with a Law Degree"

It is interesting to read the amazon reviews for this book, especially regarding regionism in hiring.

From what I understand and got from the book DOJ is not a prestige whore, but more of am achievement whore. They want top students who have done very very well, or practicing attorneys who have done very very well. They also hire almost every graduate though their honors program. So if you want to do DOJ nail your first year and get into the honors program.

Thanks for all the help!  It's one of the many job prospects I'd like to be able to consider.  Basically, right now I'm having the ol' dilemma of deciding between more highly regarded schools in far-away places vs. lower prestige closer to home.  So far I'm leaning more towards staying near home (where I wouldn't mind being long term), but I'm not 100% sure.  I guess I should just take the standard advice and pick a school in the area I'd most like to be after graduation.
