Why not just read what you want from you "unread replies" section, and then "mark all as read" for the rest. Then, they won't clutter up your box, you can read what you want, and eventually the thread will die.
It's an extra click of the button, and much faster than deleting your posts (and any relevant info that you posted will stay there for future readers, as Pookie pointed out)
