Will I get into a fistfight at Hastings?
« on: January 27, 2005, 01:01:45 AM »
So I've heard a lot of stuff about Hastings such as rampant book hiding, people getting bullied, and other such craziness.  Is this true?  Can anyone verify?  Will I get beat up if I end up there?  I really like the Bay Area but this stuff about the school is making me think twice about attending if I am accepted.

Family member just graduated...loved the competition and she won most of her fistfights (jk)!  Got a GREAT job and loves it.  Civic Center neighborhood sucks!  I worked there for 2 years.

My brother talks about people that pulled crap like hiding books back when he was in law school. The problem with doing that is after a while people can pretty much figure out who is behind those shinanigans and they get bad reputations.

He's now a successful attorney and has actually kept people from getting jobs by badmouthing them about dirty tricks they pulled way back when...

So even if they are bigger and can kick your ass you can get them back later on down the road.

1) They used to post grades in public on a "wailing wall" and you were basically ranked from 1L-3L and I think everyone knew where they were ranked. If this is still the case this would create a more competitive atmosphere and lead to the kind of horror stories you've heard about. The people I know who went to Hastings say either (A) that it was impersonal and cold or (B) it was cutthroat and basically recounting horror stories similar to what other folks have said. I do hear that if you hangout with the people from Hawaii at Hastings they tend to be nice and your experience might be a lot more friendly than if you don't.

2) Hastings is a big school so they're just bound to have a higher number of folks that make complaints. A lot of people don't find Hastings particularly nasty competition wise but with the size of the class if 5% of students complain that's still a pretty high number of people.
