Still waiting for an answer from BU.  I would love to be able to tell them how important going to BU is for me etc... is it possible to speak with an admissions person and plead my case, or is that just desperate tomfoolerly, more likely to kill what slim chance I have now?

No way...it will without doubt increase your chances for admission, most likely greatly. Send a nice letter - if you got in somewhere else comparable, let them know that too...they like to 'steal' students away from competitors.
