If I were to defer at Suffolk for a year they probably would not reconsider me for merit scholarships, would they? But if I reapplied they would?

I suggest grabbing the money. Work the year, but put a plan into action that would ensure you would not fall into the money trap. Like putting all the extra money in an account that's hard for you to get to and stuff like that.
