lawyers impressions of schools...
« on: January 02, 2005, 12:16:32 PM »
I was talking to my friend's dad the other day- he is a lawyer at a firm in Louisville, where I am from.  I was discussion my law school options to get his opinion- I eventually want to end up back in Kentucky, several years after I graduate.  He pushed UVA and Mich, if I'm accepted at Mich.  Unfortunately, because of my husband, I don't think either of those will really work.  He said Northwestern would be a great choice, but said that he would choose GWU over GULC.  So, I did some research for firms in Lousville, Lexington and Cincy to discover that several of these firms have OCI at GWU and UVA, but not at GULC.  Why is this??

Really weird.

If I were to hazard a guess, it would be taht maybe these firms can't compete with the other firms recruiting at GULC?  Or maybe they're going after specialists?  Honestly those are just guesses, I have no clue.  According to USNEWS' survey, GULC is more prestigious (judges/lawyers assessment) than GWU is.

Yeah, I saw that too!  From what I have gathered, UVA seems to be a good choice for Kentuckians wanting a better school, but wanting to ultimately work in KY; therefore, more firms would do OCI at UVA than at GULC.  Maybe it's just a fluke.

You found firms recruiting at GW? Which ones?

(Hi Melissa!)  :D

My guess is that louisville firms don't see too many GULC grads looking for jobs there. It's not exactly a high paying market that would attract out of towners. You really would have to be that random louisville kid that went to GULC (like me--and you too if you decide to go!). Regional biases are probably especially strong there. I saw them recruiting lots at Vandy in addition to the usual suspects (UofL, UK).

Still surprised he'd say GW over GULC. My guess is it's a fluke. Or maybe his firm has had more contact with GW grads than GULC grads and so they know what to expect with them?

Hey Rob!  :)

I am trying to find some that I saw, I swear I saw some that listed GWU...  Here is one that does OCI at GULC, and they hire 1L associates

Found it- this is one that does recruiting at GWU, actually in Cincy.

This is probably a dumb question, but what is this "OCI" you guys are referring to?

Thanks!

I found that kid from KY that Georgetown said they had! Too bad they didn't want to add me to the list...If you get in here, I would highly advise going.
