How to view an LSN admit....

When you see someone with similar stats get accepted to your reach or target school on LSN, do you think "Great I have a shot there!" or "Crap, they just took my spot!"? I feel like my chances get severly diminished when someone with similar gets admitted, but I have been really pessimistic lately (it's beyond the point of the glass being half empty to "what glass?").

I look at it as a good thing, mostly b/c it tells me that with my numbers they will actually read my PS and LORs.

I think the trick is just to get your apps in all hella early so that in the back of your mind you can say to yourself, "well, the chances are in my favor that i'm one of the early ones with these numbers, thereby putting me near the front of the pack ..."

I tend to agree with mariecutie, in theory - but I definitely feel your pain, midjeep.  I applied relatively early too (well, once LSAC finally got around to finishing my report, it was a month later, but I was at least complete everywhere by very early December, if not before) and am seeing people with numbers similar to mine get accepted - but I haven't heard from anywhere other than GULC (where I applied ED and got the expected ding.)  I'm a borderline applicant at many of my schools (LSAT on high end of their 25/75, or even above, but GPA well below), so I'm trying to tell myself that maybe they're just setting me aside to consider with the pack later on.  Which, is obviously better than being rejected outright!  But, then there's the whole paranoia brought on by seeing people on LSN getting in to my safeties with index numbers below mine, so why not me too?  Maybe my overall app just wasn't good enough to push me over the edge, and I'll get dings even from my safeties!  But I'm probably just being a paranoid nutjob , which helps nothing.  Anyway, try to stay positive if you can - I'm sure you have good news to come!!

i tend to think, "hey thats good, i have a chance."  unless they have the URM advantage, in which case knowing they got accepted doesnt really help

I think my view varies... if it is someone whose app was complete after mine, I get all pissy and think "what did I do wrong, what makes them so special... pay attention to me... blah blah blah" yeah, I can be needy 

But in most cases I think it gives me hope - unless they are a URM like Tree mentioned, cause I don't have that status.

Don't worry MidJeep - good things come to those who wait. I admire your perseverance - I wish I shared that quality! I hope that it pays off (and I think it will).

i never thought to view it as a bad thing.  but i will now.  gee, thanks, midjeep. 

half the stanford acceptances have my index score or less, but they're also know for looking beyond the numbers, and if they think there's little beyond my numbers, that doesn't really help me out any.

What REALLY depresses me is when I see on LSN people with similar number as I who have been rejected by schools that I've applied to.

I've always thought of it as a positive if similar numbers are accepted and negative for the reverse. The "take my spot" view didn't enter my mind until now when I read your post. Now I'm not so sure.
