?? re merit scholarships

Hi all,
What is the proper way to ask a school about merit scholarships? I don't want to come off obnoxious but I am pretty sure I am at the higher side numberswise for applicants..

And what is the standard time frame that these are awarded (ie do schools wait until all admissions are complete, and then decide who gets $$, or do they get them out early?)

After I get my acceptance letter, I've been calling and asking.  Unless my acceptance letter says something about scholarships being awarded at a particular time or actually state an awardd amount, I call the admissions office, and say, hey, when do you guys give out scholarship money?  Do you think I would qualify?  Is there any more information you need from me before I can receive an award?

Rejects: George Mason, UGA (blah).

Mfitz- congrats on that long acceptance list... lots to think about!

As for merit scholarships, the above advice is great.  I also called a few programs before I applied and felt them out a little.  So what if it bugs them.  If I'm not getting a waiver, I'm paying for a little Q and A time!  Good luck!
