I think I have a few trust fund babies in my class, also.

In general, most schools don't want you to work your first year. Speaking from experience, as someone who does occasional project work...you won't want to work your first year. I think the ABA says you can work up to 20 hrs/week max as a 1L. But, again, you won't want to.

When it comes to living expenses, you put together a budget and you borrow the money. You take into account stuff like the car, the bar tab, whatever...but remember whatever you borrow, you're going to have to pay back at some point.

I'm not sure the job options are that great between 1L/2L in terms of paying jobs. The real money starts coming in 2L summer/3L. Most of the 3Ls I know have jobs, and get paid fairly well. Some of the 2Ls work. The 1Ls I know with jobs think it sucks ass because it takes time away from studying.

Do your budget...figure out if you can have the car payment and still eat, etc. It won't automatically preclude you, but it is something you have to take into account.

You can also go into really radical thought patterns...like whether or not you actually need a car.

On the other hand, if you don't really want to go to law school right now, don't force yourself. It's grueling. Some experience in the real world can help.

Work full-time, school full-time.

Yes, it sounds insane but I know people who have gone to HYS and done it.

It requires an employer who is really flexible schedule-wise, but it can be done and it saves all of that law school debt. It also sucks your life away for three years, but...

Everyone,

a friend of mine said some law schools require full time students to work at most 10 hours a week! Eek!

does anyone know wah law students usually do or are allowed to do in order earn money?
other than loans..

best,
claudia
I have never heard of a law school that REQUIRED students to work at all.  In fact, most law schools don't allow/recommend that you work during the first year.  Your friend might be referring to work-study, which is a financial aid need-based program that allows students to begin working off their tuition while they are still in school.  Work-study is, by no means, required.  You have a choice as to whether you want to participate or if you want to use loans to finance your education.

Many students work during the summers in firms, extern, and do other law related work to finance at least part of the upcoming year's tuition.
