Recommendation Not Up To My Expectations - What To Do ???
« on: December 01, 2004, 10:12:19 PM »
OK - I had a professor of mine that is supposedly intelligent and insightful write me a recommendation.  I was under the impression that he was going to write me a great recommendation, however, the recommendation ended up being mediocre (he just showed it to me tonight).  I'm pretty sure he already sent it in to LSAC, so it's kind of too late.

It's not negative or anything.  It doesn't say anything bad about me.  Quite the contrary, it speaks very highly of me.  It's just extremely short (only a half page) and way too general.  All around - it's just not great, and not what I expected at all (I could type it out here if you really want me to).  I have two other recommendations from other professors, and I'm sure they are much better.  I was counting on great recommendations, and I still might have great recommendations, with the exception of this one (they haven't showed me what they wrote).  I knew there was something wrong when he told me he did five recommendations in one day!

I know a few schools I am applying to only want two recommendations, and I can list the two other recommenders on the app so that they'll only request the recs from those two.  In addition, this LOR (the bad one) has not been processed yet, which is good.  I've already applied to one school so I'm thinking they won't see it.  I'm applying to a few more this weekend so I'm hoping the LOR won't be processed by then (I better hurry up and get my apps out).

Is there anything else I can do to keep the schools from seeing this recommendation?

Why do you want to keep schools from seeing the letter? A negative letter may show poor judgement but a poisitive letter wont hurt you. It wont help either but hey. For what it's worth, I was on an admissions comittee for an undergrad U and a majority of the letters were only a half page and very general.

I believe even if a report is sent out already before that letter gets processed, it'll just be sent once it has been processed.  That's what happened to mine, anyway.

Baff,

I was in a similar situation.  One of my recommenders gave me a copy of what they wrote, and I am so thankful that they did, because not only did he/she use a "template" but he/she forgot to change the template from the female gender to the male gender.  How bad would that have been if I did not read that LOR!  Geez.  I did not think it was too much to ask for your prospective recommender to take a little time out of their day to write something credible for you if you deserve it.  Good luck with inactivating your LOR if you decide doing so.  8)

HKrustofsky - thanks, that's very reassuring. I feel pretty confident about 4 of my LOR but 1, well... Baff, on second thought, keep the letter. It doesn't sound like it detracts at all, so worst case scenario it doesn't add (BCS it does add). Good luck!

You're welcome Sara...I was in a similar position. I got 4 letters and the one I thought would be the strongest was the weakest (but not really all that awful).  I submitted all letters to schools that accept 4 letters figuring it wouldn't hurt.

On a side note, I discovered this site a week ago after posting on XOXO for a while so it really threw me when you thanked me! CIVILITY....WOW!!! You're awesome.

hkrufstofsky is right.  a positive letter of recommendation, no matter how short and general it may seem, can only help.  worst case scenario it doesn't make a difference.

The thing is that I already had two recommenders send in LORs before even asking him.  I knew that most schools only require two and that if I was going to make the AdComs read another one, it better a)  be a good one and b)  tell something different about me.  I'm not sure this LOR does either of those.  Also, there is a typo.  Not sure if this is a substantial problem or something very minor, but I think it sounds bad:  "I know Corey for approximately six months."

To be honest, this guy is a graduate of one of the top three law schools in the country (no joke) - I was expecting a lot more from him.  I think he just got lazy about it.  It's obvious from the fact that he did five recommendations in one day that he didn't put very much time and effort into it.  If I had to write a (great) recommendation for myself, it would have taken me at least one day.

Should I really make it inactive?  I think I may type out the whole LOR so you guys can tell me what you think.

I agree that if you read it and think its bad you should make it inactive so it doesnt get to law schools..esp if your other 2 are really strong. I think that at your reach schools in particular you only want a glowing rec on your record.

edit: yeah put it up and lets see if its really that bad...
