Calling All Baylor Law Students -- I Need Very Important Advice

Waco is not as bad as on might think Franz...in fact, it has a strange charm, albeit I do put the emphasis on strange.  Baylor is one of the biggest closet party schools in the nation, which is a pretty big deal considering the size of Waco and the fact that it is a Baptist institution that only allowed dancing on campus in the fall of 95.

Like every other purchase I've made since I got a full-time job and actually had to pay for things, I'm looking to maximize my value as much as possible.

Someone else mentioned that there have been studies done that show going to a top 20ish school isn't what's required to succeed (financially, etc) after you get out, but just being qualified for admittance to a top 20ish school(and obviously, having the ability to practice by  getting your JD and passing the Bar).

Taking this information and other factors into account has led me to believe that there's nothing wrong with going to a school that's #50 or even #150 even if I get accepted to Notre Dame, Vanderbilt, or any other school in the top 30 or so. 


I do promise you, though, if I decide not to go somewhere I will withdraw my app. ASAP.

How do future employers determine whether or not you weer qualified for a Top 20 school? Does your UGPA/LSAT follow you throughout time? I hope not. It just seems that since law school admits are so dependent on variables (ie. URM status, state residency, undergrad major, hardship factors, etc.), how could they possibly know who had the potential to be admitted to a T20 unless one was actually admitted to a T20? I guess I'm wondering about UT, since I live in the area. I know that out-of-state students need almost HYS numbers to get in, while state residents can have significantly lowere numbers. Factor in minority status and there is no average. I'm glad to hear the results of a study that supports my perosnal theory that I am not cursing myself to working in a law office that shares space with a convenience store and a cell-phone franchise by attending a #50 school... just wonder how on earth the conclusion was made.

And BTW.... I'm pretty sure Baylor's rep is good.

When you apply for 2L internships and in some cases 3L internships (which typically, eventually get you your first job that sets the pace for the rest of your career) they ask about your LSAT score and undergraduate GPA and extracurriculars since they only have 1 year of law school on which to assess you, and for 3L, I still hear they sometimes ask.  2 years of someone's life isn't a great gauge for a person on the whole, and I've even heard of law firm interviewers asking about ACT/SAT scores.  Of course, your class rank and law grades are going to be a big factor for them, but I would think it unusual to find someone who was a straight "B" student, never did anything extracurricular, and never really went beyond the call in any situation before doing mangificently in law school and then getting a great career in law and being completely successful.

And before I get barraged with stories about people who were addicted to crack in high school and had a 1.5 GPA but then miraculously turned around to be the valedictorian, keep in mind that these people are the exception to the rule, and after thinking of them, try to think of all the people you know/knew who were losers and are still losers to date--pretty overwhelming difference eh?

I had this discussion with someone else on another thread....I think maybe midjeep....and UT supposedly does not give any emphasis to URM status. There was a court case a couple of years back about it.

They're going to ask about my LSAT on interviews? Crap. I was in such a bad situation the day I took my test. My practice tests were between 168 and 173 (took the Kaplan classroom course... won it at a seminar), but I had "flood crud" the day of the exam. I'd just been working a flood zone in Eagle Pass and had come back two days before the exam. Most disaster workers get a raging case of something flu-like from wading through flood waters (full of sewage and overflowing septic tanks and dead animals and such), and I'd always managed to avoid it until THIS time. Of course. I had a fever, chills, and left the room to vomit twice. I couldn't afford to cancel the test and knew I wouldn't be able to take it again for financial reasons. I just prayed for the best. Of course I was disappointed with a 159, but it was obviously enough to get me into law school and then some. I think explaining this to a prospective employer would sound like whining, though. You know... I've been incredibly lucky throughout this entire process. I won a $1000 Kaplan prep course, wrote my PS in under an hour, had my professors ask ME if they could wrote LORs and sent them in within the same week, got accepted to my first-choice school, got a full scholarship... I guess I'll just keep praying for more luck. God has a plan for me. And for the record, I wasn't a druggie, but I was a high school dropout who never took the SAT/ACT. And I agree... I'm the exception.
