Calling All Baylor Law Students -- I Need Very Important Advice

There weren't 20 full rides or more for the 03-04 incoming class, there were 20 full rides or more for all 438 law students (that's 2001, 2002, 2003 classes combined).

The median grant amount is $3,300, suggesting that there must be a LOT of people getting like $1,000 or even $500 scholarships to counterweight us, who got $23,000+ scholarships. 

I have no clue where this money could be coming from, as they have this "Baylor 2006" thing where they're revamping a lot of the old buildings and doing major construction projects, suggesting that they aren't going to be stark crazy about spending money on scholarships. 

4 years ago when they had the big settlement against the huge tabacco firms, the plaintiff counsel were all Baylor grads, and they donated the ~$50M for the new building.  You'd think that would have hiked up the full rides back THEN (in 2001-ish) and not NOW. 

I think we're seeing a small cross-section of all Baylor applicants, though. Baylor obviously loves people who are highly self-motivated and get obsessive about things (which it seems is required) and that personality type is going to be much more likely to show up posting on LSD or putting their numbers on LawSchoolNumbers.  --I truly believe that Baylor is one of the few schools that isn't mostly numbers-oriented and really looks for people who are willing to nearly kill themselves to get the job done.  My entire personal statement was about my work ethic.  Maybe this is why you got a full-ride with your less-than-stellar (for Baylor) numbers.

 

Of course... I really wasn't thinking last night! That's still only 20 full and more-than-full () scholarships for the whole 03-04 school year of about 160 admits. That makes me feel much better! Guess I can feel special again.

This makes much more sense to me....that the scholarships were spread out over either several years or over a year. I read somewhere that the median amount of law school debt for Baylor was about $65k. That seemed like it would be too high if the majority of the class was getting a half or full tuition scholarship.

I did not know that the entire council for the plantiff were Baylor Grads!  That is impressive. Especially because I already have a class action law suit in mind that I want to work on after I become an attorney. I don't know how one goes about doing such a thing, but I hope to find out in law school and I hope that no one beats me to it in the meantime!

On a different...RPLB & UMHB Mom, what were your majors in college? Someone on another thread someone was saying that adcomms consider certain majors (like mine-Journalism) "easy" and "easy" to get a high GPA in...which I know is not the case for me as I worked very hard to achieve my 3.57 and had the highest GPA in my major. I was just wondering if maybe yall had what were considered to be "difficult" majors and so your GPA in the scholarhsip process was looked upon as being truly exceptional.

Just FYI:

When a school gets a grant, they invest it, usually in a CD or a mutual fund.  They have to wait til this investment grows enough interest to start giving out scholarships, because they ususally keep the original grant and a little more in the investment earning money.

International Finance was my major, a B.S.. 

Some AdCom's look at business degrees as "easy."  I don't really know, or really care.

I'll admit that my degree really was easy: double-major Soc/Psych. What they saw just from my transcripts is that I graduated start-to-finish in 2 1/2 years with a 3.91 GPA from my degree school(I have an "F" from the community college that brought the UGPA down... long story  ). I carried at least 20 hours every semester while raising 3 kids and I had this crazy job through Americorps as a disaster relief specialist for the Red Cross, which was a 24/7 job that sometimes yanked me out of the state  and away from my classes for up to 3 weeks(UMHB has the most awesome professors). I started my job on Sept. 10, 2001 and was yanked to NY the next month. My PS was about doing all of this after dropping out of high school when I was 17. So yeah... I'm a pretty motivated kind of girl, and if that's what they like to see, then they gave the scholarship to the right person.

Since the Spring Quarter people tend to have lower overall median numbers (156 - 159 LSAT and 3.5 - 3.7 GPA) versus Fall (159 - 164 LSAT and 3.75 - 3.97 GPA) would it help me at all to be in a class that has "lower" averages as it may improve my grades since the professors will be grading my work in comparison to theirs versus the "higher bar" Fall class?

so i was all set to say go for it until i got to this paragraph.  if u r going thinking u will be smarter than those "lower" people then u should just wait.  thats the wrong reason to start.  u automatically assume that b/c someone has a lower lsat u will surely do better than they will.  sorry to tell u, but u r mistaken.  ur perception of things is kinda skewed.  don't under estimate those "lower" people b/c they will be th ones to surprise u.  while ur thinking u will out smart them they will be the ones pulling the As and making law review.  

ur post comes off seemign as if u r insecure with ur abilities to be successful with the "higher bar" group.  i have encountered a lot of people like u.  instead of raising to the challenge and working hard to be the best they would rather drop to a "lower level"  thinking it would be easier.  its an ego thing and a clear sign of insecurity.

Do you write your posts with your cell phone keypad?  Is it really that difficult to write out "your," "you're," and "because"?

It would add a lot of credibility to what you're saying even though I'd still learn more from a Special Olympics Spelling Bee than from reading your inane blabber. 

P.S. I'd love to compare first year grades in 2006--I will need a good laugh after all that stress.

as far as my typing skills, if it wasn't so widely used by others on the board i would consider changing but for now i will continue to type u, ur, b/c.  however i will type out you're from now on.  or at least try.
