Is this a racist (or at least questionable) phrase in my essay?

I am writing an additional essay for a school regarding "any special circumstances, background, personal struggle" and wanted to know if a certain phrase might raise some red flags. I realize that the context it is in will make a big difference, but I will generalize for the sake of expediency.

I was born in this country but learned the language of parents before I went to elementary school (so little to no English). The point I am trying to make is that even though I am not an identifable URM, I did struggle with the language and my identity growing up. Here is the phrase:

"Eventually I recognized that even though my skin color was white like the other students in my class, I was very different and would struggle learning the language of the place I called home."

My sensitivity on such things tends to be fairly high and I don't see any problem with what you wrote.

I am in a similar situation -- having a not-obvious ethnic heritage -- so I may be biased, but I think that is a fair way of putting it.

Some people do get touchy about race, but if you are talking about your own personal experience (as you are here) you won't go too far wrong just telling it like it is.

Yee Haw LOL. Yes I am. This is actually part of my statement for SMU.

What language did your parents speak?

My parents are from Poland. The issue of my parent's background has been a difficult one to describe. My dad was pro-democracy in Poland during the communist regime and was held at gunpoint before he escaped to America. I am trying to not make this story too dramatic (especially since it didn't directly effect me as I didnt have the gun pointed at my head), but it is part of the reason why I want to go to law school and what kind of law I want to study.
