PS length - varies by school?
« on: October 07, 2004, 10:54:41 AM »
My personal statement at the moment is kind of a combination of two topics (1) why law school and (2) a significant life experience.  This makes it a bit longer than I expected (3 pages double spaced).  Now some applications give no guidelines at all as to length, such as Michigan who only asks for double spacing and 11 pt font, or W&L who gives no specifications at all regarding length/spacing/font.  Others such as Emory say only "two typed pages" and UIUC says two typed, doubled spaced pages (approx 600 words).

For those schools with less specific reqs is it implied that it'll be 2 pages double spaced?  Or can I go ahead and send in 2 pages single spaced for somewhere such as Emory who only specifies two typed pages, and 3 pages double spaced for Michigan who doesn't specify length?

Edit: Edited b/c I made a mistake it's emory not vanderbilt who says two typed pages.

I think it is personal preference where there are no specs. I hate single spacing, so I would never use it. My personal statement wasa bit long as well. For those who do not specify, I am sending in three pages at about 1.5 spacing. When a school lists specifics, I rework the personal statement to meet their requirements. You do not want to look bad by not following their directions.

Every school is different on this.  You just have to use your best judgment.  Certainly don't send in anything your gut feelings tell you is too excessive.

I certainly wouldn't send in anything excessive like a 5 page single spaced statement, but I was planning to adjust by school and unless the school specified, send in 3 pages, 12 pt font double spaced for ease of reading.  Thanks for the opinions.
