Where do I begin?
« on: October 04, 2004, 07:15:25 PM »
Ok, so I need to start with my personal statements and I just cannot get it started.  I've read through the advice on essayedge.  I've read through some of the sample essays.  It seems like everybody there has a story to tell.  I don't feel like I have a good story.  I'm a 21 y/o undergrad going to law school.  I haven't saved Sri Lankan teenagers.  I haven't had a midlife crisis and decided to enter law school.

I plan on talking about my interests and activities, but I don't think I can make my essay revolve around one central contribution.  I mean, it doesn't make sense to tell a story when there is no story to tell, right?

Where did everybody start when working on their PS?  What were the critical moments which guided your brainstorming?

My brain is not storming.

Seriously, there's gotta be SOMETHING you've done that is unique.  Not saving Sri Lanka, but something simple.  Think about it, I'm sure you're not as dull as this post makes you seem to be, if you are, I'm not offering any more help.

Find something that you have a passion for and write about that.

Or, you can take a small incident, write about it well and show how it ties into all your wonderful personality traits.  For example, I could write about the time I saw some dude get shot in Philly.  However, I vetoed that story because millions of other people could write the same thing.  ;)

I did not have a single story that defined me either. Instead I opted to give the ad com a sense of who I am, what makes me different than other applicants, and how my life experience has helped me to realize that I want to practice law.

I think it is important to answer three questions: Who are you? What sets you apart? and Why do you want to study law?

Good luck.
