good stuff. i wish adcomms would talk more about the ins/outs of waitlists. i really think a little transparency would go a long way in this process.

I love how blunt she is.

Once a month, Ivey?  I better get started with writing my new letters now.

"(And if you know in your heart that you wouldn't say "yes" if that call came around, be a good citizen and take yourself off the waitlist. You'll make someone else very happy.)"

This doesn't ring very true for me. I am sure many people are waitlisted at multiple schools, hopefully all of which they would like to attend over anywhere they are admitted. Can they promise any one of their waitlisted schools that they would attend if admitted? No. Should they drop off waitlists because of it? Good Lord, no.

I guess it is just not phrased very well. She seems to be talking about folks who are only riding one waitlist. However, she does not make that clear.

That is a great article. I got waitlisted at two really good schools on Monday (William & Mary and George Mason... both of which, incidentally, I celebrated, because I expected dings)

It's good advice. I plan on being particularly diligent with W&M because I really, really want to go there and I need them to know if they called me I'd go.

I was already on the waitlist at American... but I'm pulling off of that one because I really have no intention of going there when I have solid options and plan to ride the WL at GMU and W&M.

The waitlist thing is insane though. It's more promising to get called off earlier at a school like W&M where they have all their decisions made now and will start pulling off in May, as opposed to GMU which is still making decisions and doesn't even stop taking new apps till the beginning of April. They won't even start pulling off the list till June.

How beneficial do you think a visit is? Because I really would love to visit W&M but that'd be a very pricey back pat for them if I fly all the way to Virginia to show my interest and it turns out it has a negligible effect. But on their website they even mention and welcome it, so I wonder if showing a marked interest does improve your chances of getting off.

Does anyone know when your commitment to go to a school is binding? I'm sure it differs by the school, but I'm just wondering if it is ever totally binding to where you can't get out? Like if my top choice calls me during orientation at another school, I've already signed a year lease to stay in that city, etc.- I would still back out and go back to the school at which I was waitlisted, and move down there in 24 hours.. that is how bad I want to go there? The author mentions  in this article that in some instances, people can get calls that late in the process- is it still possible to go there if you get called a day or two before classes? (sure it might be unethical, embarrassing, and you would burn bridges, but it would be worth it if it is really where you wanna go)
