Is the word "dint" appropriate in formal writing?
« on: October 04, 2004, 03:08:40 PM »
I like it, but really don't know whether it's part of a casual phrase or not (I mean the phrase "X by dint of Y", not "oh no you dint").

Help me, LSD, you're my only hope.

IMO it's too archaic to use, even if the context is correct.

Lexy: PMed- I have this weird paranoia about posting actual text in light of the whole Ruskiegirl Thing.

Desmo: It is a little archaic... I just like the flavor of it. We'll see. I'll definitely drop "betwixt" and "fishmonger". :)

Thanks, team...

Actually I'd like to see the actual sentence also.  And I'd leave betwixt, but fishmonger might offend one of the adcomms.

Only use betwixt when referring to legs or breasts
