Minnesota Deadline Extension- What does this mean?
« on: March 18, 2008, 12:19:36 AM »
I noticed that the University of Minnesota extended its deadline to April 01. I've been considering sending off an application and received a fee waiver from them the other day, but I really am wondering if it's worth it at this point in the cycle? It's definitely a school I would attend, but it's a reach.

When schools extend their deadline like this, what does it indicate? I know that the more applications they get, the better it looks for them. But would a school like Minnesota (or Georgetown, or GWU) be doing this to resort to cheap numbers-boosting tactics, or are they looking for quality applicants?

i was wondering the same thing. the email they sent kind of bugged me because it was addressed to the wrong person. To make matters worse, it's not even a common name. Nor is it anywhere near my name in the alphabet.

"Dear Noele Aabye De Hernandez,"

Yeah, that's not me.  ???

Wow.....weird, Same thing happened to me, exact same name was used as well. I was like seriously its half arabian and half mexican. Anyway, I replied in email so I'll report back on what they say.

Reminds me of making the band, that episode where Diddy went out and recruited a whole new crop of guys even though almost all the beds in the house were filled.  He didn't add anymore beds, instead he made everyone compete for the same number of beds as before.

I got the email with the random name too.  Either someone wasn't on the ball, or it's just a cheap way to boost numbers.

Last week I got waitlisted via email. Then an hour later I got someone else's waitlist email. I guess that's better than getting an acceptance meant for someone else.

I was deferred in December. I received an email from them last month basically stating that they are still waiting to see if there are better applicants and that they hope I will put a deposit somewhere else and then switch to them if offered after April 15.

I take it they are having a rough cycle when you consider emails like this along with the deadline extension.

well, i emailed them and they said that they had a major computer error yesterday. They were nice enough to attach a fee waiver when I requested in the email. I just decided I'm not going to apply though because I would feel bad for the guy in this threat waiting to get in off deferral.

I got the email too, but they put my real name  :)

you must be special in the eyes of those at umn.

i'm not going to apply anyway because it's so late in the cycle, but that email left a sour taste in my mouth.  >:(
