Full ride to stetson
« on: March 17, 2008, 04:35:53 PM »
I've been offered a full ride to stetson, should i take it or should i wait to hear from UVA and George Washington before i make a decision (even if i get into one of these two schools, i will most likely not receive any money) What do you guys think about Stetson?

UVA or GW hands down.  Debt is only temporary; the degree is forever.

Stetson is a nice school and all, but I couldn't imagine passing up UVA or GWU for it. You're stuck in Central Florida for at least the immediate years after law school coming from Stetson. You have mobility from UVA and even GWU if you chose to come back to Florida.

That said, do you anticipate getting into UVA and/or GW, or is it more just a reach for you?

Do not take Stetson over those schools if you want Biglaw in Florida. The chances of you getting it are slim. Take a look a the lawyers at the top firms in Florida and Stetson is underrepresented. If you try to get a job in FL from UVA or GW, you are a big fish in a small pond. The Florida firms will get few out of state applicants and a million UF, FSU, UM, Stetson applications. You will have a much better chance of getting BIGLAW from UVA and GW in Florida or anywhere else for that matter.

Chances are slim for uva but ok for GW...How difficult is it to get a good job here in Florida out of Stetson?

And, what do you want to do after graduation? I am assuming BigLaw, but that may not be correct.

The only circumstance I can envision where Stetson would be the best choice is if you wanted to start your own firm in Tampa/ St. Pete after graduation. No debt and local connections would greatly improve your shot at being an entrepreneur.

It's not bad if you plan to stay in the Tampa/St. Petersburg area. Stetson doesn't enjoy as much mobility outside of this area, mainly because of self selection, also because it's a small and regional school.

I know of a lot of lawyers in the area who have gone to Stetson, however, you'd be competing with graduates from UF and FSU, as well as those from out of state who come to practice. Tampa isn't exactly full of biglaw jobs, so if that's your goal, you'd need to make sure you shine at Stetson.

Are they paying tuition only, or a stipend for living expenses, too?
