What to wear to ASW??
« on: February 21, 2008, 09:42:27 PM »
I am going to Penn preview tomorrow and was wondering if jeans/nice shirt was good enough or if I had to do slacks.

Any suggestions??

I wore dress pants and a sweater.  You can't really go wrong with a sweater.

True!  But definitely dress pants over nice jeans, right??

EDIT: And a briefcase over a backpack...right?

I don't like jeans, actually.  I generally wear khakis or dress pants, even when I'm not trying to be formal.

What's on the itinerary for the preview day?  I'm jealous.   :P

Thanks!  I'll do dress pants then.  It will probably be best.

There is a statement from the deans, ConLaw or Contracts class visit, lunch with faculty and students, current student panel, public service panel, career placement panel, tour, and drinking.

And the procurement of swag.

At the preview days and visits I went to last year, out of hundreds of visitors, I only saw a handful wearing anything fancier than jeans and t-shirts.  Take that as you will.

Really important advice:  Don't come off as a gunner by overdressing.  You'll just embarass yourself and feel stupid all day.

Unless the program specifically lists something like a swanky cocktail reception, you don't need to dress up at all and in fact should not dress up.  Nice jeans and a sweater or collared shirt are fine.  Basically, just keep it above a t-shirt and ripped jeans.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, do NOT overdress.  Seriously.  You should NOT wear a tie.  You should NOT wear anything that requires dry cleaning.  Do NOT wear anything that can be attached to the word "dress" (dress pants, dress shirt, etc.).  You can bring a briefcase if it looks more like a messenger bag, but a backpack is fine.

Seriously!  Every year there have been a couple admitted students who show up wearing a suit or something.  It's just painful to watch.

Dress Pants?  Briefcase?

Good god.

So you are suggesting a full suit and have the driver carry the briefcase?
