I was looking through professor profiles at various schools and most of the professors have an LLM. Is this common for an academia career path?

foreign professors basically have to have llms because you need an llm to practice in the usa if you've already studied law abroad.  older profs have llms because that's the degree that used to be awarded (or is llb?) instead of jd. for others, i don't think it's common to have an llm but i may be wrong.

Some schools also require you to have a LLM before you go for a SJD (Doctor of Judicial Science; aka a "Doctorate" in law).

It's also good to have an LLM from a top school if your JD isn't from one, and you want to go into academia. I'm told. So an LLM can be seen sort of like a master's with your JD as your BA-equivalent.
